The Tambomachay site had significant value to the ancient Incas. Known as the bath house of the Inca, the site was used for ceremonial purposes as well as a resting place. A historic and cultural site where you will see impressive stone constructions, including aqueducts, channels, and water fountains. Built in the typical Inca style Tambomachay that needs to be seen to be believed.
History of Tambomachay
According to archeologists, due to its architectural style, Tambomachay was a Sacred location for the Inca elite, a worship place where the Inca emperors used to bathe and cleanse their body and soul. Other theories point to it as a cult center, where the ancient community used to perform rituals and offerings to the water.
During Inca times, the water represented the masculinity of the world, whilst the Pachamama symbolizes femininity, both were portrayed as fertility by the Inca culture. Therefore, they considered the worshiping of the water very important since it was the source of all life.
Luckily, the sacred location wasn’t severely harmed by the Spanish and most of its structure remains intact and today some of its water channels still function.

The Water
Tambomachay , features two aqueducts carved into the rock that transports and maintains the constant flow of clean water around the site all year round. These crystal-clear waters are a central part of this historic site. The carefully sculpted stone pools, feature a fountain where the Incas worshiped the vital elements of water. Marvel at the beauty of these waterfalls, they offer visitors a natural and cultural spectacle of significant meaning.
The Pucara
Located in front of the central fountain and built on a prominent rocky outcrop, this structure has solid walls adorned with large trapezoidal niches and exquisite masonry. Known as “pucará,” or watchtower, this building could have used as a strategic observation point. Further research exposes that it also could also have functioned as an “ushnu,” a ritual platform used by the Incas for ceremonies and rituals.
The Paths
The paths to Tambomachay played a crucial role in the network of the Tahuantinsuyo. Some were commercial, connecting towns and provinces, while others, ritualistic, linked sacred sites. This latter type includes a route that starts from Sacsayhuaman, passes through Puca Pucara, and reaches Tambo Machay, a place revered as holy. These paths facilitated not only trade but also allowed the Inca and his noble family to worship in these spiritual spaces, thus integrating Tambo Machay into the critical network of paths.
The Terraces
Tambomachay is built with four platforms or terraces that adapt to the natural shape of the rocky terrain. Each platform has its architectural style that highlights the Inca skill in construction. Two of these terraces are made with orderly and precise masonry, while the other two feature stones of various shapes that fit perfectly together without mortar. On the top platform, you’ll find the site’s most emblematic wall, large and striking, featuring four trapezoidal niches. These features not only demonstrate the Incas’ technical prowess but also their deep sense of aesthetics and functionality. These designs allow Tambo Machay to stand out not only for its history but also for its architectural beauty.
Architecture of Tambomachay
Tambomachay has an expansion of at least 450 m² of construction and not all of it is excavated. You will be able to see a series of platforms; the second platform has water sprouts, which come from a spring, located nearby. See 4 stepped terraces that are built on a carved rock, each platform is 15 m long and 4 m high.
