4-Day Inca Trail Itinerary – A Summary
Day 1: Cusco – KM 82 – Hatunchaca – Wayllabamba – Ayapata
Your adventure begins at 4:30 a.m. with a pickup from your hotel in Cusco, followed by breakfast in Ollantaytambo. After arriving at KM 82, the official start of the Inca Trail, we begin our trek along the Vilcanota River, passing Inca ruins like Llactapata and taking in stunning views of the Veronica mountain peak. After lunch at Hatunchaca, we continue to our campsite near Wayllabamba. Temperatures at night can dip to 5°C (41°F).

Day 2: Wayllabamba – Dead Woman’s Pass – Pacaymayu – Ch’aqui Qqocha
We start early with a steep ascent toward the highest point of the trail, Dead Woman’s Pass (4,200 m / 13,779 ft). Along the way, enjoy sightings of native birds and cloud forest flora. After a well-deserved break, we descend to Pacaymayu for lunch, then tackle a second, shorter ascent to reach Runkuraqay Pass. We camp at Ch’aqui Qqocha, with nighttime temperatures around 4°C (39°F).

Day 3: Ch’aqui Qqocha – Phuyupatamarca – Wiñay Wayna
Day three starts with a climb to Phuyupatamarca, or the “Village in the Clouds,” offering sweeping mountain views. We explore the ancient site before descending 3,000 stone steps through cloud forest, passing the impressive Inca site of Intipata. Our day ends at the Wiñay Wayna campsite, near the famed ruins that bear the same name.

Day 4: Wiñay Wayna – Machu Picchu – Cusco
We rise at 3:30 a.m. and reach the Sun Gate by sunrise, enjoying the first panoramic view of Machu Picchu. After a 40-minute descent, we enter the citadel for a two-hour guided tour, exploring its agricultural, residential, and religious sectors. Once finished, take the bus to Aguas Calientes before boarding the train back to Cusco, arriving by early evening.
