Important Passport Requirement for Travelers to Peru

If you are booking with a passport that is set to expire within six months of your planned entry date to Peru, you must renew your passport before traveling. Peruvian authorities will not grant entry to travelers with passports that do not meet this requirement.

If you are booking your trek with us and this applies to you, you can still secure your Inca Trail permits and Machu Picchu tickets with us. However, you must renew your passport and update your passport details with us before your trip. Failure to do so may result in the forfeiture of your reserved permits and tickets.

Inca Trail permits are 100 percent non-refundable and non-transferable. Permits are issued in the name and with the passport number of the trekker and cannot be transferred to anyone else, under any circumstances. Only 500 permits are available per day, so booking in advance is highly recommended. Changes to passport details must be updated with us in advance to avoid issues with your permit.

November to February: Rainy season. Expect heavy rainfall, possible trail delays, but lush and green landscapes.

April to November: Dry season. Ideal time for trekking, with clear skies and cool nights. The landscape is drier compared to the rainy season.

May to September: High season. These are the busiest months on the Inca Trail and at Machu Picchu. Permits sell out quickly, so booking in advance is essential.

January: Permits for the following year’s Inca Trail become available. Due to high demand, securing permits as early as possible is recommended.

February: The Inca Trail closes for annual maintenance and conservation. However, alternative routes to Machu Picchu, such as Salkantay and Lares, remain open.

June 21: Winter Solstice & Inti Raymi. The biggest festival in Cusco, honoring the Incan Sun God, Inti. The celebration includes grand parades, performances, and cultural events.

December : Christmas. Every year, SAM Travel delivers gifts to remote communities, sharing the holiday spirit with those in need.
